Lord of the Flies by William Golding is an excellent book for mid-level readers with an active imagination.  Similar to shows such as Lost, it includes high tension action scenes, brutal murders, and survival situations.  However, it is also for thoughtful readers who are interested in the dynamics between social groups, methods of leadership, and the individual's struggle to overcome their own evil instincts.
The book opens when a group of boys are stranded on an island.  They initially start out by electing Ralph as their leader.  Level headed and prone to fairness, Ralph seems like a logical choice; however, Jack also wants to be leader.  By asserting his animal like nature, Jack emerges as a ruthless and violent individual, who the boys turn to because he is both more fun and more dangerous than Ralph.  A conflict arises between Ralph and Jack as both fight for the loyalty of the other boys.
Spoiler Alert:  (Since we are all going to be reading this book together, I am not going to include a spoiler)

  3. At First Sight by : Nicholas Sparks

the most interesting and compelling part of the book is when Jeremy and Lexie finally get past all there fears and lies and really truly love and trust each other. they go through so many lies and back stabbing of friends and suspicion of people around them that once they finally get past all that its sort of a relief.

the basic plot of this story is Lexie finds out she is pregnant with Jeremy's child. they have only been seeing each other for a year but since Lexie is a religious woman who comes from a small town she feels she needs to get married and move in with Jeremy in her hometown so she has not committed any sins and Jeremy respects her ways so he goes forth and gets a house with her. during the beginning part of there engagement they both experiences suspicion about each other like for example Jeremy was getting suspicious emails saying : ARE YOU SURE THE BABY IS YOURS. and he knows he is sterile so he grows to think Lexie is having an affair. him and Lexie get into a series of arguments but then finally come across to let it all go and they finally break out and tell the truth Lexie tells him "its your baby, i would like to look at you and know that i love you and this is your baby i have never cheated on you" Jeremy responds "i know".

spoiler: the ending of this story is Lexie dies due from child birth and the baby is named Clair after Lexie's mother. Jeremy raises the baby on his own and stays being a writer for a new york city column called The Scientific American.

  5. The book "That Summer" by Sarah Dessen is a great book for teenagers to read. It is more of a book that teenage girls would gravitate towards. I found it to be an easy read. Other Sarah Dessen books are similar to this because they are about teenagers and there struggles. It is about a teenage girl named Haven. This book shows some of the struggles she is going through like how her mom and dad split up, and he is getting remarried soon. She is keeping in all her emotions about everything going on to herself and not properly dealing with them. Spoiler alert in the end she runs away for the day because she didn't know how to handle the problems going on.

  6. THE THINGS THEY CARRIED
    BY TIM O'BRIEN

The Things They Carried was a great book by Tim O'Brien. It was about love, good laughs, friendship, and most importantly the war in Vietnam. If those sound good to you then I one-hundred percent recommend this book. In this book, there is a man named Lieutenant Jimmy Cross who is very much in love with this young girl from the United States. He is a younger man, about the age of 21, and he has great leadership skills. His main problem is that he cannot get the girl of his dreams, Martha, out of his head. He blames himself for the death of a man named Ted Lavender, because while he was being shot by a sniper, all Jimmy could think about was Martha. He later forgave himself but he still regrets how he thought of Martha during the entire war. The ending is pretty dramatic because it ends with the narrator dreaming about his times in Vietnam and explaining how he is 43 years old, healthy, and has a family and how lucky he is that he did not die during the war and how happy he is that he made every decision he did. He also is remembering how much he cared and still cares about the men he served with in Vietnam and built life-long friendships.

  7. In the book, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", written by Brian Selznick, Hugo, the main character is a mysterious family-less boy who lives in the dark walls of a train station. This book is perfect for those of you who like mystery-adventure books. It is filled with strange stories and mysteries of a non-fictional man named Georges Meleis. It takes place in Paris in 1931 inside a busy train station in which Hugo lives in. This book is a somewhat easy read for people who often read. The book begins in the train station with Hugo. He is the timekeeper of the station, meaning he takes care of and winds all the clocks every day. Nobody knows that he is not accompanied by an adult, so he is doing his best not to get caught. The toy booth keeper, Georges Meleis, is a grouchy old man who is accompanied by his goddaughter most of the time in the station, and together they discover Hugo and his secrets. They find that the mechanical man that Hugo's father found in the museum he used to work in before he died that Hugo has dedicated his life to fix, was created by Georges Meleis. And when this is discovered, all secrets are let loose and change Hugo's life forever. Georges' secret past was uncovered to be a magician, and that's when he made the mechanical man. After he was a magician, he used his skill with small mechanisms and parts to make a movie camera, and started making movies that nobody has ever seen before. His movies are scenes you would only see in a dream. After Hugo was discovered, he was taken in by Georges and his wife, then later became a magician himself.

  11. "Stolen" by Lucy Christopher is a book pretty much based on a letter that Gemma write to Ty. The letter is about all the time that Gemma spend with Ty when she "stole" her away from the world, her life and took her to the middle of and Australian dessert. And how she felt about him. This book is very good for people that like mystery and lot of suspense. Also for the people that would like to find out how it feels to be kidnapped and taken to the middle of no where. The story started of as how Gemma is at the airport with her parent and she meets a very handsome young men, Ty, and how he buys her a cup of coffee and drugs it an takes her to a unknown place in the middle of a dessert.

  12. The book "Breathless" by Jessica Warman is a beautiful and compelling book written for young adults. Breathless includes topics that so many teens can relate too; well... maybe not the fact that the main character gets sent away to a boarding school because her brother is trying to kill her, but other than that, it is a very relevant book for teens. As you turn through the pages, you soak up the feelings and emotions the characters are expressing. By the second chapter I already felt like I was a student at Woodsdale Private High School. The book explores new levels of how a mental illness can affect a family.

The book opens in a very dramatic scene: Katie Kitrell, a 15 year-old girl who lives in a small town in Illinois with her mom, dad and occasionally her brother, is being pushed aside by paramedics while they are trying to reach her brother who is sitting on the swing set in their neighbors back yard. Will, Katie's older brother, had self-inflicted cuts all over his arms and was covered in blood. Katie's parents were crying, and the neighbors where shrieking at the sight and rushing their children back inside. Katie on the other hand, had no idea how to react. The ambulance took off before Katie had the chance to say goodbye to her brother; she really thought she would never see him again. Everything changed after that night. Katie's brother survives that night but is sent to a home for Schizophrenic boys. Katie's parents send her to a boarding school where she will be away from the trauma of her brother and this way she can focus more on her passion: swimming. Katie's new life is far from what she is used too. Wanting to leave her past behind, Katie tells everyone that her brother died that night in her neighbors backyard.

In "breathless", Jessica Warman describes how lying about your past can affect your future.

Spoiler Alert: Katie makes many friends at Woodsdale and actually becomes popular. At the end of her senior year she is looking back and is actually proud of the fact that she has managed to keep a secret this whole time, but then, out of no where, one of her "friends" Estella, tells everybody about how her brother is actually alive. She also explains how not only is he alive and crazy, but in a jail because he killed his doctor.

  20. Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins, is a great book for any age that has read the hunger games or enjoys dystopian societal stories. This book is full of high action death scenes, romance, and emotional hardships. I would also recommend this to adults, even though it is a young adult book, because it brings up subjects that most young people can't quite comprehend.
The main character, Katniss Everdeen, is the face of the rebellion, and although she is against the capital and the capital's leader (President Snow), she finds out that she is also against the rebel leader (President Coin). This book makes for a great read, as well as being read many times!

    *SPOILER ALERT*
eventually after finnicks death we find our heroes hiding in the capitol trying to kill president snow, when a bomb goes off killing a bunch of children including primm (Katniss,s sister)
every one is so up in arms about this that they sent president snow to be executed. katniss was snows executioner. when she was about to kill snow he said he didn't set those bombs but katniss killed him out of anger anyway then she realizes that the bombs were in a tactical order that coin was practicing and she realized that coin killed the kids to the the civilians of his side
after realizing this katniss kills coin and gets sent to jail. she finally goes back to district 12 along with haymitch and peeta (who is better now) and katniss and peeta get married and have kids THE END! -Tyrus Borkowski

  31. In the book The Traitor Game B.R Collins writes about two exciting worlds. If you like action then this is the book for you. It talks about everyday problems such as homosexuality, distrust, revenge, bullying, and so much more. The story takes place in two worlds. Ours, and Evgard. Evgard being the made up world that Michael, a wimpy scared bullied kid made up. After his mom introduces him to Fracis, a cool guy they begin to get along. Eventually Francis finds out about Evgard and plays along. He and Michael both contribute to making it better by drawing maps, making up new things and so on. Eventually once they are in high school Michael finds a mysterious note in his locker that reveals Evgard. Michael quickly assumes Francis had something to do with it. Does he confront Francis? No, instead he goes straight to the school bully shipley and tells him that Francis is gay. Now why would he do this is he already knows what bullying feels like? He instead acted on impulse and betrayed his best friend. Meanwhile in the other world Evgard, a similar problem is going on. Michael's equivalent, Argent a merish boy makes friends with one of his captors. Now he is faced with a decision to make, betray his friend and help his people.

  32. Impact zone by Todd Strasser is a great book for teens or anyone really to read. It is an inspiring book and contains a sport which is surfing. And it is for people who enjoy book in which a teens can make a change in there communities and how they can end some bulling. The level of reading for this book is about medium level reading.
The plot of my book is that Lucas and his friends aren't letting anyone ride in there favorite surf spot. Kai challenged Lucas and his friends to a surf off. If Kai wins Lucas has to let anyone surf in there spot but, if Lucas wins Kai can no longer surf. Kai has another problem too because he works with his dad and can't practice so that also conflicts with the main plot.
    SPOILER
Kai ends up beating lucas in surf off.

  33. Feeling Sorry for Celia by Jaclyn Moriarty is a fascinating book for mid-level readers who enjoy adolescent fiction. This book describes perfectly the confusion and bitter sweet hope of being a teenager. It is written all in letter formation which gives you an actual feeling of being in the book with the rest of the characters. This book begins by describing a sophmore in high school named Elizabeth. Her life is pretty complicated; her best friend Celia keeps dissapering, her father who is always gone has recetly reappered, and the only way she speaks to her mother is through weird notes written on the fridge. Elizabeth's english teacher has assigned her a "pen-pal" and now a complete stranger knows more about Elizabeth than anyone else. Later in the book Elizabeth falls for a boy named Saxton but Celia, her bestfriend is to blind to realize it and swoops him away. Elizabeth looses both her crush and bestfriend.
SPOILER: Elizabeth finds out her step-brother is actually her biological brother, she falls in love with a boy who takes the same bus as her (Jared), her relationship with her mother gets better, and her new bestfriend becomes Christina (her pen pal).

  34. The Help by Katheryn Stockett is an inspirational yet informative novel that touches on the civil rights issues in Jackson Mississippi during the 1960's. Stockett paints a realistic picture of the situation that took place and makes a fiction book seem frighteningly real. Any one who wants to read a page-turner that can educate you on the situation of black maids during the 1960's should definitely read this book.
The Help starts off by introducing 1 of the 3 main characters, Aibileen. Aibileen is a black maid who works for a white socialite and raises her daughter for her. The book then goes on to introduce the next main character, Minnie, who is a black maid that works for the most popular and most racist white woman in town. The third main character introduced is Miss Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan who is an educated and motivated young woman that wants to be an author that makes a difference. Throughout the book Aibileen, Skeeter, and Minnie work together to secretly go against the strict Jim Crow laws and write a tell all book about being working for white people in Jackson .
    SPOILER ALERT:
In the end of the story Minnie, Aibileen, and Skeeter are successful in writing and publishing their book and don't get arrested, assaulted, or in any trouble at all. Even though most things go well for the characters in the end, the ending is not a perfect fairy tale ending which makes The Help seem all the more real.
